What are Sealants?

Brushing, flossing and regular cleanings are the best way to prevent tooth decay. However, children and cavity-prone patients may need additional help to protect their teeth against cavities. Sealants are thin protective coatings that we apply to the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Made from plastic or other high-quality dental materials, sealants coat the tooth and seal out the bacteria that cause decay. They can be painlessly applied in just one visit.

How Do Sealants Work?

The surfaces of your back teeth contain natural grooves and depressions. Even with great oral brushing and flossing habits, food particles and bacteria can become trapped in these grooves. Once the sealant is applied to the tooth, it keeps bacteria and cavity-causing debris from getting trapped on your teeth. Sealants can also be applied over areas at the initial stages of decay to prevent further damage to the tooth.

Who is a Candidate for Sealants?

Children between the ages of six and 12 are the best candidates for sealants. Sealants are also recommended for patients with health conditions that prevent them from effectively brushing, flossing or maintaining good oral hygiene. Our dentists also recommend sealing molars as soon as they come in to keep them cavity-free.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

With proper care and regular checkups, your sealants can last up to 10 years. Be sure to schedule a visit to our office every six months to assess the condition of your sealants. We can replace sealants as often as necessary to ensure the health of your teeth.
